Here are some of the state agencies you should be familiar with for your business.


The Kansas Business Center is a centralized website that assists business owners with the different resources/agencies available at the state level. Similarly, Kansas.gov has a business link, which is a statewide portal for business agencies.

The Kansas Department of Commerce offers many programs for business owners. Of particular interest to small business owners are their startup assistance programs, microloan programs, export assistance programs, and programs tied to job creation. Commerce also sponsors a program called The First Stop Clearinghouse that helps businesses identify the licensing and permit requirements for their particular industries. The Kansas Secretary of State handles incorporation filing documents, business name registration, KS trademarks and all associated forms. Their phone number is 785-296-4564.

Kansas Rural Development is a state program of the federal US Department of Agriculture. It has economic development programs for firms in small communities.

The Kansas Technology Enterprise Corporation (KTEC) is a state program for technology firms, including research, assistance, and investment. Their phone number is 785-296-5272.

The Kansas Department of of Labor has an extensive website that covers multiple issues associated with being an employer including workers compensation, workplace laws, unemployment insurance, etc.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment website provides information for industries that have health and environmental impacts.

The Kansas Insurance Commissioner websote contains a page that specifically addresses small business insurance issues.
